HOW TO BECOME AN OFFICAL EDUCATION MAJOR

Bachelor of Arts (B.A.) in Early Childhood Education
Steps to being accepted into the School of Education Department of Curriculum

STEP 1

Earn a minimum grade point average (GPA) of 2.5 in Clark Atlanta University's core curriculum, and meet all other admission requirements listed in the 2004-2006 Undergraduate Catalog (p. 365).

Students must be on track to complete the University's core curriculum by the end of the spring semester in the year in which they apply to the School of Education for admission into the Early Childhood Education Program.

STEP 2
Earn a passing composite score on the Praxis I test [526 on the paper-based test (PPST) or 964 on the computer-based test (CBT)].

Passing test scores are determined by the Georgia Professional Standards Commission (PSC), the organization that certifies teachers in the state. For more information on teacher certification in Georgia, visit www.gapsc.com . For more information on the Praxis test series, visit www.ets.org/praxis. The new GACE educator testing program will replace the Praxis test series in Georgia beginning September 1, 2006 (visit www.gace.nesinc.com for more information).

Students who earned the following minimum combined scores are exempt from taking the Praxis I test:

SAT: 1,000 (obtained by adding the verbal and math sections);

ACT: 43 (obtained by adding the English and math sections); or

GRE: 1,030 (obtained by adding the verbal and quantitative sections).

Satisfying the Praxis I test requirement is a prerequisite for all education classes with the exception of the Praxis I preparation course (Preprofessional Seminar ~ CEDC 199).

STEP 3
Submit to the Department of Curriculum in the School of Education an application that includes proof of passing the Praxis I test (or exemption scores) and all other necessary documents by April 1 in order to begin the program the following fall semester.

Students must be at least a second-semester sophomore to apply for the Early Childhood Education program.

Early Childhood Education Application Packets are available in the Department of

Curriculum ~ 105 Clement Hall (404) 880-8485.

STEP 4
